Insightful Commentary on Iraq coverage

Can be found here. The author is Orson Scott Card, science fiction writer (official site, collection of similar essays on his related site Ornery American).

I enjoy everything OSC writes (that I've read so far). His Alvin Maker series is a thoughtful and magically alternative history fantasy series. I've only read three books of the Ender series so far, but I'm always on the look out for the next book at the used book store. It's a philosophical science fiction about how humans deal with new species as they go space-faring. Very well thought out. Okay, that's a very general overview description - there is plenty of adventure in the books too.

In any case, the essay linked above states and encapsulates a lot of how I'm feeling about the Iraq coverage. I have to say I didn't vote for Bush, and really did not want him to be our President. However, I feel he's grown into his position and is executing it admirably. My co-workers will probably heavily dis-agree with me, but I applaud his announcement of who will be allowed to bid on the primary reconstruction contracts. Country's that try to tell us it's illegal are blowing smoke up their own arses (it's our tax money, we can spend it how we like). They're just sour because our President is sticking to his guns.

I don't follow the news in detail. If anybody wants to get into a political or news debate with me, I'll lose everytime. I tend to wait for the events to pass and read up on them afterwards. Things flux too much as they are happening and I don't like that much. However, my gut feeling from what little I do read on blogs/websites and follow on CNN is that we are doing good in this war. President Bush is doing (overall) a good job. I do not understand the constant media negativity. I was extremely surprised to learn that Bush's surprise visit to the troops at Thanksgiving is apparently a constroversy (Turkey-gate) and people are putting about that the Turkey he's holding in the pictures is plastic. Whatever.

I freely admit that my view of the currect political situation is influenced by living over here and getting 80% of my news and information from blogs and news sites. I would most probably have a different view if I was still living in the States. NPR is my favorite radio station there. Unfortunately, I can't receive their news programs over here (it's not the same listening via Real Player 12 hours later). NPR tends to be more leftist, while it appears that I'm reading more right-of-center blogs/websites. It's funny, I've always considered myself to be a liberal (leftist). I'm definitely not a right wing religious nut. Please don't ask if I've been SAVED or EVER describe me as re-born. I definitely have leftist tendencies, but I'm not totally left. It's a bit of a mix. About like most people probably. :)

Okay, enough rambling. I'm off to suck on another cough lozenge, read my free copy of Quicksilver and fall asleep. Good night! Posted by Jinglelady at December 16, 2003 11:19 PM | Previous Blog | TrackBack
