Free book

So this new book comes out - Quicksliver by Neal Stephenson. I've heard of this author - he's written other sci-fi-y tomes (such as Crptonomicon and Snow Crash) that have been reviewed and commented on by geeks at Slashdot and other places. And many in the blog-o-sphere were awaiting the release of this new book in the States last month.

Turns out my boss bought an English trade paperback version of this book just before the US hardback came out. Which, actually, isn't that uncommon here. I could buy Red Rabbit by Tom Clancy in paperback here MONTHS before it came out as a paperback in the US.

Anyway, to get to the free book part, it seems my boss hates the cover of the version he bought. Really dislikes it. This version is published by an English publishing house, and he loves the cover of the one that is published by the American publishing house. So - he goes and buys the American hardback and gives me the trade paperback. Good deal, or what?

Oh, btw Mom: you can add Neal Stephenson, Greg Bear, and Orson Scott Card to the list of authors I like to read. However, I've read most of one series and part of another from OSC, so you'll have to ask me specifically about books from him.
