Catching up and Lost in Anne Rice

It's almost Wednesday, and I haven't updated in since Saturday.

Hmm, spent a few hours Sunday at the pool by myself trying to cool off. It worked as long as I was in the pool. Minute I got out, I was sweating again.

Afterwards, I came home, ate some ice cream and watched K-Pax. That was a pretty good movie. A bit fluffy, but I like the two explanations for Kevin Spacey's character. One for the practical scientific side of things, one for the alternative supernatural side. Overall, a nice movie.

I ran out of new books to read on Wednesday last week when I finished reading Harry Potter. Which, incidentally was quite good and I was imagining the movie characters throughout the entire book. Very vivid descriptions and details. I thought she kind of wimped out on the Quidditch plot twist though - it seemed like that would add too much detail to the book and too many things for Harry to do, so she gave him an easy way out of not playing for the entire book. Anyway, I turned to a science philosophy book I'm halfway through and have been reading off and on for two years (Richard Dawkin's Unweaving the Rainbow), but it wasn't enough. I went to the bookstore, didn't find any English books that I wanted to spend 10-13 Euro on, so I picked up an interesting German novel (Die Detektivin, by Nikola Hahn - a crime novel set in 1880s Frankfurt). Which held my interest as long as the train ride home. Not that it's not interesting, but it's WORK to read in German. I only get about 80% of the gist of what's going on and have to frequently re-read to get the context. And I wasn't looking for work on the weekend.

Finally, I went through my bookcase again and realized I still hadn't finished The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. I picked it up at a Fleamarket in Frankfurt back in February and managed to get to page 100 or so before putting it down for something more interesting. It's actually an interesting book, but the first 100-150 pages is slow going. There is a lot of plot lines going on, a lot of foreshadowing and references to past events that aren't clear yet. However, now the book has gone through the entire history of the witch's family and is just now returning to the present. So things are coming together and it's really engaging me at this point. I picked it up Sunday afternoon, and I've been reading it on the train, at night and in the morning since then. I'm now at page 630 and there are 400 more pages to go.

Back to reading before going to bed for the night. Tschuss. Posted by Jinglelady at August 13, 2003 12:31 AM | Previous Blog | TrackBack
