I had a good and
I had a good and adventuresome weekend. The weekend started on Friday for me and a train ride to Frankfurt. The train system here has a Bayern Ticket: for 21Euro, up to five people can travel anywhere in Bavaria on the regional trains (not the fast trains). It happens that Frankfurt is about 30 min. across the border of Bavaria, so for about 27Euro, I can travel to Frankfurt on the slow trains vs. 75Euro on the fast trains. It takes nearly twice the time and you have to change the train two or three times, but hey....if you're not in a hurry, it works. Unfortunately, I forgot to get off the train at the first stop, so I got off two stops later thinking it would be easy to just catch the next train back and hopefully make my connection. WRONG! I got off in the middle of NOWHERE and the train only stops there once an hour, tops. Fortunately, there is a bus that goes back to the train station I missed. I only had to walk about a mile in drizzly rain to catch it. But, I made it in time to catch the connection after the one I was supposed to take. Not too bad....and I even made it into Frankfurt around the time I expected to anyway.
I got to see my new temporary apartment on Friday. It's two floors above my office, and is the size of the common work office AND my bosses office. It's HUGE. And, they've just finished remodeling it and furnishing it. The entire apartment is furnished by IKEA, but it's nice. :) Oh, and for scenery, I get to look out onto a courtyard and occasionally the guy in the apartment across from mine likes to sit in his window and snort cocaine. NICE (sarcasm). I only plan on staying in this place for a couple of months. I should have some interesting stories to tell about living there as it's in the area of the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) which is not the nicest area of Frankfurt -- lots of sex shops and the like.
On Saturday Dieter and I went for a cruise on the Rhein river to see Rhein in Flammen (Rhein in Flames). About three times a year, various castles along the Rhein put on a spectacular fireworks show. It went on for about an hour. At least three castles near where we were stopped took turns shooting off fireworks. Very romantic and very nice.
I took another vacation day on Monday and stayed home packing and cleaning. I was supposed to have four people come to look at my apartment, but only one showed up. Oh well, I got five boxes packed and part of a suitcase.
More later.
