Wisdom Teeth/Weisheitszähne

Die Weisheit ist forbei! My wisdom is gone! Sigh.

I had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday. And despite all the horror stories people wanted to pile on me about getting their wisdom teeth removed, all went pretty well. The right side came out in five minutes. Even if I did thing for a minute that my entire right side was coming with it, it came out. Then she went to work on the left side. Apparently it was really narrow up there and she didn't have much maneuvering room. The tooth itself was loose, she just couldn't get a good grip. So she broke it up little by little and pulled mightly and it eventually came out. They cleaned me up, gave me an anti swelling shot and left me alone for 10 minutes with a cold pack. That was it. In an hour, I was done.

One thing that they did that I really liked was they put some lip lotion on my lips to keep the lips nice, soft and pliable. Good thing too, or I would have a split lip now from the left side.

Afterwards I shakily made my way the grocery store for some jogurt and soup. Next stop: McDonalds for a milkshake. That was interesting - my lips weren't cooperating to well, so I basically had to shove the straw in my mouth, clamp down and suck. Of course, I had to experiment with it some, so I got a couple of funny looks in the Sbahn. :P

At home, I checked mail and then fell into bed until about 10:30. Got up ate my soup, read some, and went back to sleep.

This morning my left side is sore and a little swollen. In comparison to the left, the right is fine, just a little soreness. I'm putting a cold pack on my left side every few hours.

NO NO NO NO NO STRAWS!!! if you use a straw the sucking action may dislodge the blood clot which is what helps the area heal and helps the bone regenerate. NO STRAWS!!

Other then that don't talk more then necessary, when I had mine taken out my jaw did hurt a little from all the movement, but you should rinse mildly with luke warm water and a pinch of salt just to keep to area clean brushing and flossing will aggravate the area

feel better :)

I know I'm too late but.......

Janine is right!! stay away from straws!! Those areas needs to clot, if the clots become loose & dislodge, you'll end up w/a dry socket & that is NO FUN!!! Also no carbonated beverages, if you still have swelling do the ice packs 15 minutes on/15 minutes off. That seems to be the most comfortable for most people. I've not only been there done that, but I work for a DDS!!

Hope u feel better by the time u wake up & read this!!

My mom got to the blog before me today. When she told me you were drinking a milkshake through a straw... I feared for *YOUR* life! lol!

Good thing I know people who work for dentists. My dentist didn't say anything about straws or carbonated drinks. So of course the first thing I do is get a milkshake and then last night I drank two carbonated drinks. But I was good up until then! I drank only water until then.

Oh, and I asked them yesterday morning (when they called to see how I was doing) how I should clean my teeth. She just said if it hurts, don't, otherwise normal, just easy in the back. I used Listerine the first night because I wanted to make sure the area was clean. I guess that's a no no too? I"ll rinse with salt water this morning.

As for the ice packs, I've been doing about 15 min every three - four hours. Although this morning the left side is really swollen, so I"ll probably be doing it more often.

Thanks for all the advice! :)

I'm cringing to your first hand account at the dentist! Never liked em, never will! I do hope your feeling a O.K.? Anyhow good blog, have fun in Deutsland.

Per your advice, Brett's Mom, I'm putting the ice on more often when I can. It's seemed to help. :)

And Dave - really, the procedure itself was fine. Normal pressure and funny noises, but the dentist was really nice and kept asking if I was okay.
