Greece vs. Portugal.
In the 57th min, Greece just did a CLASSIC corner kick with a head butt into the goal. PERFECT!!!! First goal of the game and it's Greece's!
I have to say I've been annoyed by their (Greece's) playing tactics - more defense than offense in the first half and always flippin' waiting to kick the ball - BUT, it's working.
Now they're REALLY playing soccer.
75th min: Ronaldo for Portugal just tried a goal and went WIDE of the mark. However, here's the part I don't understand....why wasn't offsides called? He was the ONLY Portugese player there and the Greeks were way back. I thought I understood off sides, but two situations in the last two games (an offsides called because a ball was PASSED to somebody behind the other team - but he NEVER touched the ball) have me wondering.
86th min: Stupid fan. Or publicity stunt? A guy just ran on the field with a flag, threw it down and then raced the police for the Portugese goal.
90th min: Five more minutes (because of stupid fans and injury's) for the Portugese team to tie it up. Otherwise it looks like the unbelievable has happened - Greece has won. And I picked them!!
95th min: Greece won!!!! The little team that could, that NOBODY thought would win, has WON!!!!!!!!
I think all of Greece will be celebrating tonight!

Posted by: Mom at July 5, 2004 02:22 AMOh I don’t know Anna. I sort of found “Jimmy Jumper” amusing. Oh…and I don’t mean to gloat but check the “comments” on your June 24th entry. Damn I’m good! :) You should have listend.
Posted by: Duncan at July 5, 2004 07:40 AMOk, wer traut sich Abseits zu erklären?
Posted by: Dominik at July 5, 2004 11:22 AMah, das sieht doch nett aus:

http://www.burtrandworld.co.uk/offside-rule.php
offside:
what counts is where the attacking player is in the very moment when the other player kicks the ball to pass it in direction of the opposite goal. it doesn't matter where ronaldo was when he RECEIVED the ball! it only counts where he was when the other player touched the ball to make the pass. and Ronaldo was clearly not offside. but they always show it on tv, with an artificial line and everything. but the link provided by the other poster is very detailed and far more comprehensive than my entry.
cheers
Thanks Ulli and Dominik for the links and explanations. I understand offsides a lot better now. :) Thanks again!
Posted by: Anna at July 6, 2004 10:01 PMOh, and Duncan, yes, you're right. You suggested Greece long before I decided to go with the underdogs. And Happy Birthday!
