I finally bought my first set of dishes. My first real, "I'm a grown up now" dishes. Yes, I had dishes before, but they were a set of 4, in a pattern I didn't particularly care about (didn't hate, didn't love), that were a Christmas gift from my parents. Now I have a lovely colorful set of 8 that I bought myself. :) Two yellow, two creamy orange, two creamy green, one two tone green and one two tone yellow/orange. I like them a lot. And since I bought them directly from the factory, the 4 chargers, 8 large plates, 8 small plates, 8 bowls, and 4 serving bowls of various sizes cost me a whopping 115Euro. Excellent deal!
If you're ever in the Frankfurt area and are looking for dinnerware, you should check out Waechtersbach Factory Outlet. Mom shopped there twenty years ago, I went back there last year with my girlfriend (she bought a set of eight two-tone dishes), and now I've shopped there for myself. It's a family tradition.

Posted by: Brett at July 18, 2004 12:42 AMWow 115€ sounds so expensive... are they of a special material or why is that? I mean, no offense, but can't u get dishes similar to that at IKEA? But they do look nice.
Posted by: EasyEverything at July 18, 2004 01:53 PMHi EasyEverything....well, I could get something similar at IKEA, but not in the same colors and not the same quality. These dishes are pretty heavy and good quality. And 115 is at least half, if not a third, of what I would pay in Kaufhof for the exact same dishes. And even though at the factory most of them are seconds (ie, a small imperfection), I've seen the same imperfections in Kaufhof that I've seen at the factory. So, I'd rather by them direct from the factory for the cheaper price.
Posted by: Anna at July 18, 2004 07:45 PMSHIT!! If I knew you were going back there I would have had you pick up 2 replacements for what I dropped and the dogs knocked over and broke.
I did post on my blog that I found my set of dishes (similar to Anna's except two-tone) here in the US and they were more then triple the price then I had got them at the factory.
Posted by: Janine at July 18, 2004 08:40 PMCan you put them in the microwave-oven?
Posted by: Peter at July 18, 2004 09:54 PMJanine, let us know what you need and we might be making a second stop there before we leave. No guarantees but, we might.
Posted by: Mom at July 18, 2004 11:06 PMJanine. Even if you could, if you love your dishes, don't put them in the micro! It will take it's toll on them eventually.
Posted by: Brat at July 19, 2004 08:31 AMPeter - technically, yes. However, I think the large plate is too large for the microwave and even so, as Bill (Brat) suggests, I don't think I will that often.
In Germany anyway I don't use the microwave all that much. :)
