My West Wing Season 2 & 3 DVD's arrived today. Woo hoo! :)
However, I had to pay €14.33 in Customs for it! What?? I think that's a ripoff. You don't have to pay customs when you order books from Amazon.com. And Amazon.com didn't mention anything about a possible Customs fee when they shipped it to me.
Does anybody know (assuming I still have readers) if this is correct or not?
Posted by Jinglelady at February 15, 2005 03:33 PM | German Life | TrackBackHow lucky are you! I have season one, but we haven't gotten any others yet, though we both love the show. Hubby bought me season one of Charmed for Valentine's Day... now I can't wait for the rest of the seasons to come out lol I love TV on DVD, just wish they wouldn't take so long between putting out the seasons rofl.
Posted by: Marvie at February 15, 2005 04:37 PMSince I have no life... :) I did a little research for you.

Basically says, you may be subject to customs fees, but to contact the local customs as to why.
Posted by: Jon at February 15, 2005 05:35 PMI'd imagine most of that customs fee is 16% for VAT, which you technically have to pay on almost anything you order outside the EU. My experience is that if a package is has a declared value over €50 or so, chances are good that German customs will check it.
Posted by: Scott at February 15, 2005 06:26 PMYeah, I'm thinking it's based on the declared value, as I sent something to Steph for his birthday last year and he had to pay customs on it (I was so not pleased!).
I'm still searching for a decent price for the second half of season 1. We just have a zone 2 DVD player, so I've been checking out ebay.fr with not fabulous results.
Posted by: ViVi at February 15, 2005 07:54 PMOh no, that's not good news. I have to pick up an M-bag (of books) from the customs house tomorrow.
Posted by: J at February 15, 2005 10:45 PMI have a friend stationed in Italy.. she orders from Amazon and has it sent to me, then I forward it on to her as a gift. As far as I know she's never paid any customs fees. I think as long as it comes to you as Merchandise (not gifts) you may have to pay a fee.
Posted by: Pam at February 16, 2005 04:42 AMThanks for the tips! (I *do* still have readers! ;) )
The general concensous seems to be it has to be merchendise over a certain value, and for some reason books aren't always included. Definitely things to keep in mind for the future!
Posted by: Anna at February 16, 2005 08:40 AMHey, I live in Germany too. No you shouldn't have to pay any taxes. My German gf had this problem. You're allowed to order stuff duty free up to a certain amount plus you just say they are for personal use. You have to go to some sort of Amt, or send them a letter but I wouldn't pay it if I were you.
PS WW is great! Good choice!
I sent a care package to a friend of mine in the Peace Corps in Morocco. I hope she didn't have to pay customs for it! :(
Posted by: Amanda at February 16, 2005 01:23 PMI ordered from Amazon.co.uk and didn't have to pay customs. I even used my original US Amazon account but put in my German shipping address.
As for the person with the region 2 DVD player, check online for a hack that'll make it region free. They're out there and they are simple to do.

My friend Renata in Germany just took her american DVD player to a shop and they put in a multi-system chip for less the 25 euro. May be worth checking into.

Posted by: Brat at February 18, 2005 12:32 AMThere are any number of ways around the region code problem. On many cheap DVD players the code can be changed by pressing a few buttons, or possibly updating the firmware. The funciotn is probably not list in the handbood; Google is your friend.
Or just burn a copy with the region code removed. This is handy for DVDs you'll be taking with you on trips (say, to keep your kids entertained :-).
