My New Car!

My Mom & Dad just sent me photos of my [Price is Right voice] new car [/Price is Right voice]! Isn't it a beaut?? It's exactly what I wanted and I'm soooo happy they were able to buy it for/with me. Yippee!!

For some reason, I just got photos with all the doors open. One of the photos looks like the Prius is trying to fly - that or pretending to be a Dorian. ;)

And check this out:

Just 57 miles on the car! About 50 of that is the drive from the dealer to my parents. Woo hoo!

Interesting German car tidbit: when Stefan and I went for the test drive last weekend, half the menu/display options in the car were English, half were Deutsch. The salesperson was explaining how the car worked to us and he says "Here's the ODO reading, blah blah blah" and Stefan had to stop him - what is ODO? THe odometer apparently doesn't have a name in German. I'm sure it does - in fact LEO lists a couple of translations here - but it's not word most Germans know. Stefan couldn't tell me what the name of it was in German. Odd, huh?

I still think the Prius looks quite odd - still can't say I like it. However, I know the thrill of owning a brand new car. I bought my only brand new car in 1988. Loved it.

I'll be buying a new bike next year.

Very flash!

And "odometer" - it's one of those words that I never understood when I read American novels. In Britain (or at least my family and everyone I know) will ask "how many miles does it have on the clock?"
I did get the dictionary out and check at some point though....

I have one question. The car can be used in two languages. Now, since I know the car is made in Japan I would have figured Japanese and English. But, no the two languages are - English and French - can you explain?

I just heard on the Today Show that Toyota will now start making their Hybrid cars in the States.

Would you please fix the car picture. It doesn't look that small like it does in the picture you posted.

Mom - I don't understand the English & French options. I would have expected Spanish as a second option. Hmm....maybe it's because of Canada? Maybe the autos coming in can be sent to US or Canada. No idea.

As for the photo - if I leave it normal size, it pushes the right hand side off. So I shrunk it a little bit. BUT, you can click on the photo to see the full size.

Can I get photos of the car without all the doors open?? :)

Jay - yeah the Prius looks a little space age-y, but I like it. If it was a normal car, I wouldn't go for it, but I'm going for the cool tech here. The cool tech and high mpg far out weigh the look. In fact those two things enhance the look. If you know what I mean. Though the look isn't really bad. :D

Are you sure you don't mean "Delorean"?

Mmmm...pretty. I am jealous. I have not had a new car since 1997, and that new car smell. Ahh, the new car smell. Don't let your Mom leave the doors open too much, or the smell will go away. Must keep new car smell.
(sniff sniff)
Me? Fetish? Nah.....

Car is now locked with "The Club!" Only to be taken off in case of emergency - like I need to go somewhere!!!!

Your friend Stefan must have had a slight black-out. The word "kilometerzaehler" is well known here in Germany, after all, it's one of the first things you check when you buy a used car ("kilometerzaehlerstand").
Odometer is indeed a word that the overwhelming majority of Germans never heard of. It's not a word you get taught in school and the German term sounds totally unrelated to its counterpart in the US.
Best regards (and drive safely),

Funnily enough, two of my British colleagues didn't know the word 'odometer' when we were talking about cars today.

that's because the British don't have 'odometers' they have 'odometres'. you insensitive clod!

(my funnay slays me)

Hooray! Congratulations, Anna! Enjoy your "zen-mobile." (the smooth, quiet ride always chills me out, but not enough to fall asleep!) Keep an eye out for unsuspecting peds and cyclists in front of you as it's also a "stealth-mobile."
