Back in the spring, I crocheted up a baby hat for a coworker. I promised to write up the pattern. 6 month laters, I'm finally posting it. Sorry guys, I'm just now getting back in the groove of wanting to post to the blog. Drum roll please....
Inspired Peek-a-Boo Baby Hat
The hat is crocheted as a tube, then one end is sewn together. As a result, you're going to think it's way too big, but when you sew it together, it's the right size. Trust me. :)
Your starting chain is dependant on the size of the baby's head. However, the starting chain needs to be a multiple of 4+2. So measure/guesstimate the size of baby's head, chain to that size and then make sure the chain is a multiple of 4 and then add 2.
My customer's baby's head was 18 inches/45cm in diameter, I used a sport-weight yarn (Dito by Lana Grossa), and a 4mm/F size hook, so that is what my instructions are geared toward.
Unless specified, you are working in both loops of the chain.
Ch 70, join with slip stitch to starting chain. DO NOT TURN.
From now on, you should have 70 stitchs always in each round.
Row 1: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 2: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc, in front loops only, in each ch around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 3: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc, in back loops only, in each ch around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 4-5: Repeat Row 2-3.
Row 6-9: Repeat Row 1.
Row 10: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc in next sc. Sl st in next 2 sc, *sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next 2 sc*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 11: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc in next sc. Ch 2, skip 2 sl st, *sc in next 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sl st*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 12: ch1, sc in same st as joining. Sc in next sc. 2 sc in ch2 space. *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in ch2 space*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st to 1st sc.
Row 13-14: Repeat Row 1.
Row 15-30: Repeat Rows 10-14 three times.
Row 31: Repeat Row 1. Finish off.
You have a baby head sized tube now.
Now comes the tricky part: whip stitching the top together. Basically, turn the hat inside out, fold the hat in half, then half again. Whipstitch the two opposing halfs together, then whip stitch the other halfs together. Clear as mud, huh?
More specific directions:
Turn the hat inside out, and hold it together flat. On the end without the ribbing, start whip stitching it together. Whip stitch 10 stiches together, skip 16 stitches (but bring the ends together), then whip stitch the last 9 together. Then, starting at the middle of skipped 16 stitches on one side, whip stitch those together (8 stitches), and then cross over and whip stitch the other skipped 16 stitches (again 8 stitches). You now have four points. Finish off, and turn the hat right side out.
Done!

Posted by: maria at November 23, 2005 10:12 PMI just made this hat this morning and I think it is adorable. One note that I would include in your starting chain directions is this: You're starting chain should be divisible by 4+2, and if you want to make sure that the peek-a-boo holes are even (meaning that you don't have a spot where the rows begin and end that are solid or without a peek-a-boo) your starting chain should also be divisible by 8. My starting chain was 52+2 (so 54) and I ended up with a solid spot at the joining area. I wish I knew how to post a photo so you could see what I mean, but I don't. Also, if anyone is looking to make this for a newborn, mine worked up great on an F hook with Bernat's Satin (worsted weight) and the starting chain of 54 and I only repeated rows 10-14 twice....I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for sharing the pattern with others to use! I can't wait for my baby girl to arrive and wear it!

Your pineapple shawl is beautiful, is there a pattern I could purchase, please ;)

Posted by: Sonja at December 6, 2005 04:41 AMHi Tammy!
I would love to see a photo of your version of the hat. As for the solid spot on the joining, I know what you mean. I had thought about do that change, but then I thought that might make the join weaker. I'll have to experiment and see how it works out.
Thanks for the feedback!
